Learning Centers
8th Grade English- I created student learning centers that were student directed. Our class was reading Anne Frank and I wanted students to learn about Anne and her family. Student groups came up with a problems or something they were questioning. Groups researched and made short presentations to the class.
Students also completed the unit with a RAFT piece of writing.
RAFT assignments encourage students to uncover their own voices and formats for presenting their ideas about content information they are studying. Students learn to respond to writing prompts that require them to think about various perspectives:

RAFT assignments encourage students to uncover their own voices and formats for presenting their ideas about content information they are studying. Students learn to respond to writing prompts that require them to think about various perspectives:
- Role of the Writer: Who are you as the writer? A movie star? The President? A plant?
- Audience: To whom are you writing? A senator? Yourself? A company?
- Format: In what format are you writing? A diary entry? A newspaper? A love letter?
- Topic: What are you writing about?
Choice
5th grade reading students were provided choices each week. Students could choose what they wanted to complete and in what order. This allowed me to work with students who had difficulty, while others students worked independently.
