August 2012 Reflection
My reflection. This month seemed to fly. Are we sure it is September and school has started? I’m not quite sure where to start. It seems that there is so much to think about, as well as so much to do. There truly are not enough hours in the day to complete everything. I sit here and think about my last year as a learner. What an exciting year. I believe I am evolving each month - teacher - learner - and even a facilitator for my classes. It certainly has been one heck of a ride.
I would like to take a few minutes and talk about my summer. My summer unfolded in an unusual way - books, articles, read, beach, books, articles, read, vacation, books, articles, read, beach, etc. I don’t believe I have had so many piles of books and articles in all of my days as a student. I am so glad that I read do much this summer. Can a person read too much? I am not sure when to say enough is enough. I am hoping to visit about this at our next meeting.
I would also like to talk about the book. I love it. That is really nothing knew. I loved so many of our books. What a wonderful library you have helped to create. This leads me to another point - I have so many quotes from many of our books that can add to my paper - again - where do I stop? Just venting - I know I have to decide. Cannot wait for this weekend to talk to others. So back to the book. I felt this book was talking to me - showing me the light when teaching. I loved it so much that I took copies for two of our new teachers. I am a mentor to the English teacher, but our new math teacher was so nervous about the first day of class. She wasn’t sure how to start and I told her that I would help her out. I immediately made copies of the section about the math teacher (excellent reading). This book really made me stop and think about teaching. I looked at my classroom and wanted my room to reflect what I wanted my students to think about. Like the book, I added quotes and changed my boards. I also had students read and explore the room the first day of class. We talked about the quotes and the saying and what they meant. Those little things have made a huge difference in my class.
Finally, I would like to talk about being a mentor. I had to do some soul searching because I wanted to get this right. I read a few of our books again and went through notes and such. What did I want to convey to my new teacher? Well, everything I have learned in our community of course!!! I know that I could not have accomplished this without being part of our community, Thank you!!! After the first week of school my new teacher said, “Thank you. I couldn’t have done it with out you.” Enough said!!!!!
